Each Monday fortnightly patients in W4.3 at Fremantle Hospital spend quality time with a special visitor – Murphy the dog.

Murphy is part of Animal Companions (external link), a not-for-profit group that provides pet therapy for people in hospital and nursing homes.

Senior Occupational Therapist Jeremy Kaaden said pet therapy helped reduce loneliness and provided interaction and companionship.

“Over the past year, Animal Companions volunteer Nicole Lobry de Bruyn and Murphy have been regular visitors on the ward.”

“The visits have been well-received, particularly with the older adults who have a special bond with Murphy.”

“The visits are a great addition to the existing inpatient therapy programs,” he said.
