The world-class management of patients with severe and hard-to-manage Crohn`s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis that is undertaken at Fremantle Hospital has now been recognised with the decision to officially open the Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health, Mr John Hyde, MLA, officially launched the Centre today saying that through the specialist integrated medical service provided by the Centre many hundreds of patients will continue to benefit.

Wheelchairs belonging to Fremantle Hospital often end up in the strangest places – in parks, at the railway station, left in shopping centres and in car parks and even in garden sheds. A record number – 60 in fact – have not been returned to the Hospital during the year. Each chair has a $500 replacement value and the Hospital is keen to get as many back as possible.

Staff at BHS have been asked to cease smoking on site from November 5, as the first step to Bentley Health Service becoming completely smoke-free by January 1 2008. Rockingham Peel Diabetes Service wins National Award :   (20 Sep 2007)
Rockingham-Peel Group diabetes educator Maxine Schlaeppi has been awarded a $5000 grant in an annual national diabetes award. The 2007 Abbott Diabetes Care Service Development grant and certificate were awarded to Maxine for her work in the `creation of a multidisciplinary insulin infusion clinic,` and it is the first time the award has been won in Western Australia.

Elizabeth Tassell is somewhat of a celebrity at Fremantle Hospital, and now it`s official. The mail room employee has been chosen as Employee of the Month for April 2007 by her peers. Elizabeth, who walks about 40 kilometres a day across the hospital delivering mail and other items, is perhaps the best known staff member at the hospital, one of the few who is recognised by first name alone.

There will be nine extra Christmas stockings to fill this year for babies born to staff on Fremantle Hospital`s Children’s Ward. Between March 13 and November 17 2006 nine babies - three daughters and six sons - were born to eight paediatric nurses and a paediatric consultant causing the third such baby boom for staff on the ward in six years.

PATIENT transport just went up a gear thanks to a generous donation by the Fremantle Hospital Ladies` Auxiliary.
